Main components of a brushed DC motor

Jun 20, 2024

1. Rotor: The rotor is the rotating part of the motor, usually composed of a group of electromagnets. These ferromagnetic materials are called permanent magnets. The rotor generates a magnetic field through the current, which interacts with the stator to achieve rotational motion.

2. Stator: The stator is the stationary part of the motor, usually consisting of a set of coils or windings. When electricity is passed through the stator windings, a magnetic field is generated, which interacts with the rotor magnetic field to generate torque, causing the rotor to rotate.

3. Brushes and current collectors: Brushes are carbon brushes made of conductive material and fixed to the stator of the motor. The current collector is a metal ring that contacts the brush and is usually installed on the rotor. The function of the brushes and current collectors is to conduct current into the rotor to maintain the polarity of the rotor's magnetic field, thereby achieving continuous rotation.

4. Bearings: Bearings are used to support and position the rotor and stator so that they can rotate freely. Common types of bearings include rolling bearings and sliding bearings.

5. Housing: The housing is the outer packaging of the motor, which is used to protect the internal components and provide mechanical support. The housing is usually made of metal or plastic.
