1. Brushless DC Motor with DC Motor Characteristics
A motor whose back EMF waveform and power supply current waveform are both rectangular waves is called a rectangular wave synchronous motor, also known as a brushless DC motor. This type of motor is powered by a DC power supply, and the position of the main rotor is detected by a position sensor, and the detected signal is used to trigger the corresponding electronic commutation circuit to achieve contactless commutation. Obviously, such a brushless DC motor has various operating characteristics of a brushed DC motor.
2. Brushless motor with AC motor characteristics
A motor whose back EMF waveform and supply current waveform are both sine waves is called a sine wave synchronous motor. This type of motor is also powered by a DC power source, but the DC power is converted to AC power by an inverter, which then drives a normal synchronous motor. Therefore, they have various operating characteristics of synchronous motors.
